writing portfolio
During my graduate program, we had the opportunity to write stories and to pitch our class assignments to various outlets. Many of us in the program wrote for the different publications within the Texas A&M University System. I am grateful for these opportunities to start building my portfolio even before my career officially began.
maroon weekly internship
Maroon Weekly is a local publication in the Bryan/College Station area that reports on the latest in entertainment, arts, and culture. After writing the story below on the annual Texas A&M Physics Festival, I inquired about whether they have summer internships. After a few weeks of discussion, I was invited to be one of their two interns for the summer. My first official position at a publication was a great experience. I was able to practice my interviewing skills, writing and editing, and learn about the publication process from idea generation to final print.
CVM internship
There are two tracks of my graduate program; students can choose between the Internship or Thesis Track. I decided to go with the Internship Track because I wanted the real-life experience that an internship could give me. After months and months of researching internship programs, I reached out to the CVM Office of Communications to see if they had a need for or were interested in having an intern. I was thrilled to be offered a position as their editorial intern for my final semester.
My first assignment was to help finish editing the next edition of CVM Today. After completing that initial assignment, my main responsibilities were to interview CVM veterinary students, staff, and researchers and write Pet Talk columns. These stories are more informative and casual, with the purpose of educating pet owners on a range of questions and concerns. Additionally, I had the opportunity to write a number of interesting news stories on research coming out of the CVM and events.
My experience in the office was cut short in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, so I finished my internship working from home.
